Anne Hathaway's Cottage .

About a mile from Stratford is the little village of Shottery, where is the cottage in which lived Anne Hathaway, afterwards Shakespeare's wife. It was a boy's attachment, for he was only nineteen when they married, while she was eight years the senior. Tradition leans to the opinion that married life did not come up to youthful expectation, and it seems certain that Anne was little, if at all, with Shakespeare in London, and she is only mentioned by his will in connection with the " second-best bed." But she was once, at all events, his sweetheart; and the humble thatched cottage in which she dwelt attracts therefore that interest which surrounds all belonging to the immortal poet of Avon.
