A stunning woodcut in mint condition Dated 1986 from a 1987 portfolio entitled Black and White frm the Rouge Press Highlights the work of 8 East London artists Each work is numbered 15 of 50 in pencil Titled Going Under in pencil lower left Signed by the artist lower right Measures overall 57cms by 38cms In MINT condition Phyllis Mahon was born in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland in 1953. She completed a B.A. Honours Degree in Fine Art (Painting) and a Higher Diploma in Fine Art (Printmaking) at Belfast College of Art before moving to London in 1976 where she was accepted into the Artists’ Short-life Housing scheme in the East End. This provided both studio space and accommodation which enabled her to dedicate time to creating and exhibiting. Whilst in London, she had three children, Matthew, Uisliu & Orla, with first her husband Brian Campbell. These years, until 1992, were spent exhibiting artwork extensively throughout the UK and Ireland, as well as taking part in the yearly Open Studios in association with the Whitechapel Gallery. During her time in London, Phyllis frequently illustrated for such companies as the BBC, Cosmopolitan Magazine, Fontana Books, Good Housekeeping and Pan Books. In 1986, she worked with a group of 8 East End female artists known as ROUGE PRESS to produce a limited edition portfolio of lino-prints.Phyllis moved to Lincolnshire in 1993 where she now lives with second husband Robert Willmington She has three stepchildren, Sunny, Arron & Billy. This move to the countryside had an immediate effect on her artwork in that the content became brighter and more joyful. In 1995 she was commissioned by the International Colour Therapy company, Aura-Soma Products Ltd, to illustrate the New Aeon Tarot Set, a double-sided set containing 200 images in watercolour and chalk pastel. For the following five years Phyllis was the company artist and illustrated various projects including the Company’s 1998 calendar which featured her images of Angels and all the label imagery for the Sea Essences and Colour Essences ranges, the former being representational images of sea creatures, the latter, abstract images which represent the energy of individual colours. Other work included the illustration of various books including of John Dillon-Guy’s book "Full Spectrum Numerology" and the Ancient Chinese Oracle. She designed the layout and illustrated the book Aurajin which allies the colour system to Jin Shin Jitsu and has been commissioned by the The International Association of Colour, The Oracle Trust and by companies in Northern Ireland and Norway.In 2003, Phyllis launched a range of hand-made greetings cards, 'Fi & Fou ~ Me & You' based on personal imagery, which became Josephine Cards in 2009. In 2004 she created a series of handmade books of her imagery & related poetry and also received an Arts Council England (East Midlands) award to learn stonecarving. Phyllis has works in the public collections of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland; Aura Soma Products Ltd; Belfast Telegraph; Bedfordshire County Council; Dillington House,Somerset County Council; Ulster Television and in private collections in Austria, Australia, Britain, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, Spain and the USA.
