Antique Meyssens Engraving - Arnauld Le Grand Of Flanders (d 964)- Original 1663
This antique engraving is of Arnauld Le Grand of Flanders and is no 10 from "Effigies des Forestiers et Comtes de Flandres" a publication of designs by Jean (Johannes) Meyssens prepared by his son Cornille Meyssens in 1663. The (translated) Old French caption of the engraving describes the Count: "Arnauld Le Grand, married to Alide, daughter of Heribert, Count of Vermand. He fought in wars against the Huns, Vandals, Normans and against Emperor Othon. This dispute was resolved by the intervention of several of the nobility. He founded 12 canons in the church of St Donas at Bruges, and died in 964AD. He is buried next to his father at Blandin." The engraving is in excellent condition with only minor foxing. The unmounted folio is 12 inches (297mm) x 8 inches (197mm). The engraving itself is 7 inches (170mm) x 5 inches (120mm). (Packaging will include a hardboard mount to prevent creasing.)
